Rising Energy Costs
It was estimated by the Energy Information Administration that in 2005, 86% of primary energy production in the world came from burning fossil fuels, with the remaining non-fossil sources being hydroelectric 6.3%, nuclear 6.0%, and other (geothermal, solar, wind, and wood and waste) 0.9 percent.Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources and reserves are being depleted much faster than new ones are being formed. The production and use of fossil fuels raise environmental concerns. A global movement toward the generation of renewable energy is therefore under way to help meet increased energy needs.
The burning of fossil fuels produces around 21.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, but it is estimated that natural processes can only absorb about half of that amount, so there is a net increase of 11.6 billion tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year.
Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that contributes to global warming, causing the average surface temperature of the Earth to rise, which climate scientists agree will cause major adverse effects and, over time, cause sea level rise.
The annual rates of prices growth for both electricity and gas are at record levels. The
rise in gas wholesale prices is the main factor in these huge increases
as around 35% of the UK's electricity is generated by gas-fired power
stations.

And so it becomes obvious that, at some point, we have to look to alternative sources of energy before our current supplies dry up. By improving heating efficiency and tapping alternative resources like solar power, we can not only reduce the consumption of fossil fuels but also cut harmful emissions of CO2 at the same time.
